At the age of nine I was brought to the eastern part of the United States from the Navaho Indian Reservation in Arizona to be raised by a family who studied and practiced Christian Science. I was enrolled in a Christian Science Sunday School, even though I spoke very little English at the time. Now, after many years of studying Christian Science, I would like to share the following testimony.
Prayer in Christian Science was used for healing all my childhood ills and accidents and for my demonstration of intelligence first in the home tutoring I received and later in the local high school. In both cases I received good grades.
When I was eleven, my adoptive mother and I wintered on the west coast of Florida in a rented cottage. One day after my daily tutoring I went swimming in the Gulf of Mexico, just as I had done many times before. As I was coming out of the water onto the shore, I stepped on a sea urchin or some other poisonous sea creature, which caused much pain to my foot and also some bleeding. This discomfort was quickly overcome through the prayers of my mother.
