When I was a teen-ager I went through a period of deep depression and discouragement. My parents had divorced and the family had scattered. It seemed that I had no real family anymore, no adult who cared what became of me, no money, and no prospect of higher education. When with friends my own age, I tried to conceal a growing sense of panic and inadequacy about facing the world alone. I seriously considered suicide and tried to decide how this might be accomplished.
Although I was interested in religion, read the Bible and discussed its meaning, I could find little comfort. A family friend said one day, "You will never be happy—you ask too many questions, and there aren't any answers."
I had heard a little about Christian Science and was somewhat interested, but we lived in a small town with no advertised services. Then part of the family, including me, made a temporary move to a city. I casually remarked to a new adult acquaintance that I was curious about Christian Science and wondered how I could find out something about it. He said, "They have Christian Science Reading Rooms" and looked up the address of the nearest one in the telephone book.
