One day in April 1986 I didn't exercise my usual caution in bicycling across a street; I pedaled right out onto the traffic lane from behind a bus. The driver of a fast-approaching car braked hard, but I was hit and flung to the pavement.
An ambulance was there in a very short time, and I was taken to a nearby hospital. There I was X-rayed, and it was determined that I had broken at least two ribs and suffered internal injuries. Because I had also suffered abrasions, the doctor wanted to give me a tetanus shot, but I declined and signed a form releasing him from any responsibility. I allowed the doctor to bandage my ribs, and then I went home.
At first I wasn't able to breathe properly and suffered cramps if I didn't move very carefully. There were other symptoms of injury as well. But I clung to the spiritual truths of being. I also had the prayerful help of a Christian Science practitioner throughout this experience.
