One of my very first healings was of whooping cough and took place before I was a year old. My mother was not then practicing Christian Science, so when I choked, stopped breathing, and lost consciousness, she called a doctor. But he said that there was nothing he could do because we lived in the country and he could not get there in time to be of assistance.

My mother was gripped with panic, as all human aid seemed gone. It was then that the saying "Man's extremity is God's opportunity" proved to be true. My grandmother, who was a Christian Scientist and was visiting at the time, took me in her arms and began to pray. I soon revived and was totally healed. This healing was instrumental in Mother's becoming a devoted student of Christian Science.

My grandmother's calm trust in God had developed through many proofs of God's care. Christian Science had been presented to her when the doctors had pronounced her to be in the last stages of tuberculosis with only a few months to live. Through Science she was healed, had nine children, and lived a long, full life. And she was able to help and heal many others.
