When I was married (over fifty years ago), our lives seemed to consist of nothing but parties. We seldom thought of anything aside from having a "good time." I had been brought up in a very simple way. My family was a family of thinkers, but I had become caught up in the glamour of society. The more I thought about this new life style that I had entered, the more I longed for something truly satisfying.

I was also troubled by asthma. It was believed I had inherited this disorder from a grandmother with whom we had lived. When I married, the family doctor told me not to think of having children, because this condition was so severe.

A relative who lived in the country quite a distance away sometimes came to visit us. She was a Christian Scientist and had once taken me to a Christian Science Sunday School. This made an impression on me, although I scarcely remember the occasion, since I was quite small then. Also, the relative showed much kindness toward us, a quality that I came to associate with Christian Science.
