Over many years of studying Christian Science and putting it...
Over many years of studying Christian Science and putting it into practice, I have learned a happy thing: God really does "give his angels charge over thee, to keep thee in all thy ways" (Ps. 91:11). When I think of the willful or ignorant ways I've sometimes strayed into, and realize how, even during those times, God has protected, lifted up, and healed me, I am awed.
When my wife and I had been married only a short while, I became ill and grew progressively worse. At that point I was rather perfunctory in my study of Christian Science. Seeing how distressed I was, my wife asked if she might call a Christian Science practitioner and request her to pray for me. I told her to go ahead if she wanted to, but thought to myself that it probably wouldn't accomplish anything. I was secretly speculating whether I had inherited physical problems that would incapacitate me. The prospect of invalidism was terrifying.
My wife called a practitioner whom I did not know. I didn't talk with her myself, but she agreed to pray for me. Nothing happened, as far as I could tell, and I found myself thinking that this kind of treatment—especially from someone who wasn't even present—was silly business. How could this woman who didn't even know me do anything? The second night went much as the first. My wife again phoned the practitioner. But my condition seemed to grow worse, not better.
