As a student of Christian Science who has had...
As a student of Christian Science who has had many physical healings, I have come to appreciate the expanded perception, or spiritual understanding, of God that comes with scientific healing, more than the healing itself.
After several years of rewarding volunteer work, and while our children were in their early teens, I felt ready for full-time employment. The unexpected career that came my way offered unlimited opportunities for growth and giving, and I was delighted. As this work expanded, however, I became frustrated with my home situation. Besides family tensions, I was confronted with personal challenges I felt illequipped to meet. Under the strain of conflicting demands, I suffered heart palpitations, extreme fear, and finally a severe nervous breakdown. I had never known such panic and pain, and I leaned heavily on the help of a Christian Science practitioner.
At one point I wanted to use a sleeping pill for relief, since I was too frightened to eat or sleep. But the practitioner encouraged me instead to recognize God's supreme control of the universe. That night all that my terrified thought could grasp was a simple lesson from nature—that the bulbs we plant in the fall send up flowers in the spring. Yet I was sustained and was never again tempted to consider seeking aid from drugs.
