How do I know I'm growing spiritually?

When I was about ten years old, my mother bought me a new dress. Because I had been in hand-me-downs from my many cousins, I loved that dress. I wore it to Sunday School and on special occasions.

Then one year at the start of school, my mother gave me permission to wear it as an everyday dress. To my chagrin I found I had outgrown it! But I soon realized that its cut and style were hardly suitable for me any longer. There was no reluctance in parting with it; rather, I was ready and eager for something new.

This illustration has encouraged me many times when the temptation comes to hold on willfully to a particular person, location, or thing. Mrs. Eddy cautions us, "When outgrowing the old, you should not fear to put on the new." Science and Health, p. 452.
