Gone fishing
(See John 21:2-17)
There have been times
when I too
have gone fishing
(when the demands of spirituality
seemed too high and my meager
abilities hardly up to the qualifications needed—
when it seemed the only thing to do
was go back to the old occupation
where I belonged.
Oh! but to be so occupied
was nothing gainful—I caught no
fish with which to feed myself or you.)
Then looking up, I saw the Christ,
and in the midst of seeming dearth
there were fish!
Fish enough to fill my net—
jump-filled, that before was empty—
strengthened now with hope and faith, unbreakable.
Follow me, and I
will make you
fishers of men, he'd said.
I've gone fishing!
