Eight years ago I was starting life alone after many years of an unhappy marriage. I walked into a Christian Science Reading Room, not quite knowing why. This first contact led to the provision of a place to stay in a lovely home. Some months later I attended services in a branch Church of Christ, Scientist. Although I understood little of what was said, I felt the love expressed by the members. A solo based on the ninety-first Psalm gave me strength and confidence and encouraged me to read more of the Bible. A friend gave me Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy, which I read along with the Christian Science periodicals.
For many years I had suffered with hay fever, and every autumn felt miserable. I decided to apply my newfound religion and went to see a Christian Science practitioner. One visit brought healing. The symptoms disappeared along with fear of the autumn season, and I threw away all my pills and drops. At the same time all desire for alcohol, which I had relied on for comfort and help, left me.
