Mrs. Eddy states, in reply to the question "How would you define Christian Science?" in her book Rudimental Divine Science (p. 1), "As the law of God, the law of good, interpreting and demonstrating the divine Principle and rule of universal harmony."

My acknowledgment of this law, several years ago, lifted me out of a desperate physical problem and brought me freedom. I had apparently been stricken with a heart attack. It was so severe that it incapacitated me. I was thousands of miles from home. With the prayerful support of a Christian Science practitioner, I made the trip home. It was necessary for me to be carried in a wheelchair onto the plane. Pain and fear engulfed me. But I was a lifelong Christian Scientist, and I was praying earnestly.

At home, I had the sole responsibility for my young child and for myself. Steadfastly I refuted the fearful symptoms of the physical senses, pain and weakness and inability to eat, sleep, or walk. Steadfastly I claimed my present perfection and God-given dominion over the body. I saw that a false sense of responsibility was the crux of the problem. When unable to sleep, I learned to handle fear and pain by affirming the allness of divine Love, leaning on God, recognizing Him as the loving Father-Mother of both the child and me.
