A book of laws to show the right and wrong
Imagine that you're trying to build beautiful houses. You have high ideals but little practical understanding of the rules and necessities of construction. Every house you build either falls down of its own accord or is flattened by the first storm. After a while you'd probably either give up or else decide to learn the laws of house construction, no matter what!
Building moral character is somewhat like that. We may have the highest hopes and best intentions, but if we lack the practical understanding of God's moral and spiritual laws, we'll find the going tough. Rather than give up our high ideals, let's determine to learn God's laws, no matter what!
