Our Reliable Defense

Many trust God's defense, or protection, to an extent. They trust Him to comfort them in times of sadness, to guide them in times of confusion, to correct them when they have made a mistake. But why do not more people trust Him to heal disease and establish health? "If we are Christians on all moral questions, but are in darkness as to the physical exemption which Christianity includes, then we must have more faith in God on this subject and be more alive to His promises,"^{Science and Health, p. 373;} writes Mrs. Eddy in Science and Health. We find just such a promise in Psalms 103:2-5. There we are first admonished, "Bless the Lord... and forget not all his benefits." And then in the three verses following we are promised five specific benefits from God, including the healing of all our diseases. All our diseases, the promise reads, not just minor ones without frightening names or symptoms.

Certainly Christ Jesus trusted this biblical promise implicitly. He refused to accept disease as the true condition of man. He knew the Father to be unwavering, invariable good and man to be God's own child; and with this understanding he healed the sick and sinning. No medical diagnoses, theories, prognostications, nor treatment had any part in his healing work. Instead of looking to matter, he turned unreservedly to Spirit for all his information about man. "Jesus beheld in Science the perfect man, who appeared to him where sinning mortal man appears to mortals," explains Mrs. Eddy. "In this perfect man the Saviour saw God's own likeness, and this correct view of man healed the sick."^{ibid., pp. 476-477;} If one desires to heal as Jesus did, he must follow the Master's example. He must turn completely away from the material picture of man in bondage to matter and look to God, divine Love, for the spiritual evidence of man as His likeness.

Today Christian Science reveals anew the truth of God as the Father, divine Love, which equips us to heal human discord as surely as it did Jesus and his disciples. Many unacquainted with the teachings of this Science may wonder how its adherents can so confidently rely upon God instead of material medicine for their health and safety. But to the practicing Christian Scientist, no care is so sure as the unfailing love of the one Father-Mother God; no defense is so certain as the potency of Truth; no emergency is too great for omnipotent Love!
