The Right Spirit
Ann hurled herself out of the pool and ran out of the gate to meet her mother. She was almost nine years old and felt pretty grown-up most of the time, but today she was close to crying.
"He's so mean—nobody likes him, and he yells so loud it scares me—I don't want to swim anymore. Do I have to?" This came in one big breath as she jumped into the car beside her mother.
Her mother was surprised because Ann had always loved her swimming and worked hard at it.
