The Only Ego
Does Christian Science heal? Yes. How? Through the understanding, the application, and the living of basic spiritual facts. What are fundamental truths of Christian Science? That God is Mind and Soul, all consciousness; that man is the effect of Mind, which is the only cause; that the infinitude of Mind excludes matter as a possibility.
What are the implications of these truths? The divine Mind is all that can know, all that can speak. It is the only I, the only Ego. On the other hand, as Mary Baker Eddy says in Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures: "What is termed matter, being unintelligent, cannot say, 'I suffer, I die, I am sick, or I am well.' It is the so-called mortal mind which voices this and appears to itself to make good its claim." Science and Health, p. 210;
These are metaphysical truths, not fascinating or preposterous abstractions. The practice of Christian Science, encouraging and healing us, confirms this. In fact, the more the metaphysical realities of being are understood and admitted, the more practical they are.
