My mother was led to investigate Christian Science when she was given a copy of Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy. I was raised in Christian Science, attended the Sunday School, and early gained a love of the teaching. My childhood was relatively free from physical disorders. Measles and oak poisoning were healed through prayer.

Upon entering the business world I decided I wanted to smoke and drink. However, I still pursued some study of Christian Science. Seven years later I became an earnest student. My desire for church membership was so strong that the desire to smoke and drink left me permanently, and I am delighted now to be free of these unrewarding habits.

Some years ago a problem of constipation presented itself. There had been no proper elimination for a startling number of weeks. At first I was able to go to work, but finally I became very ill. The Christian Science practitioner treating me worked with the thoughts that the presence of Love eliminates hate, the presence of Life eliminates death, the presence of Truth eliminates error, and so on with all the synonyms for God. On the third day after the practitioner started to work, a Christian Science visiting nurse came to bathe, feed, and read to me. Before she left, the healing occurred. It was painless, and within a few hours I had resumed all my normal activities. The loving care of the visiting nurse had a great deal to do with this healing, because through it I felt God's love for me at a time when I was feeling very much alone.
