Have you ever attended a Wednesday evening meeting?

Something to Look Forward To

When I was a child at boarding school, I looked forward most to Sunday evenings, when we gathered in the headmistress's room and she read us a storybook. Usually we sat around on the floor, and it was very cozy, more like a home than a school.

Now that I am more than quite grown-up, there is another occasion I look forward to even more. It is the Wednesday evening testimony meeting at our local Church of Christ, Scientist. Here too we are a family, whether we are longtime members or hearing about Christian Science for the first time. Singing the opening hymn makes us feel that way—that all are God's children.

After the hymn we are read to from what many believe are the two best books on earth: the King James Version of the Bible, and Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy. This latter book throws a penetrating light on the Bible, and the citations from both books focus on a specific subject prayerfully prepared by the Reader. The opening hymn gives a clue as to the subject—which is always healing in nature. Sometimes the citations may point the way to correcting a current world situation, or to curing physical or moral problems, or to comforting the sad and lonely.
