I did not quickly accept Christian Science, although I now understand the blessings I received from my first reading of Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy. Many healings from illness, accidents, and all kinds of discords have blessed my family since I accepted Science and became a serious student. Although I am very grateful for these healings, I am much more grateful for the spiritual understanding they have brought.

Our sixth child was born after I had begun studying and applying Christian Science. By my choice the delivery was made at home. The birth was harmonious in every way. A few weeks after the birth of this little boy, a city nurse came to our house to make a PKU test for mental retardation, as required by law. I was not aware of the exemption from the test that was possible for us as Christian Scientists, so I let the test be made. Two weeks later we were informed that the results of the test indicated extreme abnormality. We decided to rely completely on spiritual means for healing. My husband asked me to call a Christian Science practitioner.

In my own prayer for the child this verse from the Bible was especially helpful (Ps. 138:8): "The Lord will perfect that which concerneth me: thy mercy, O Lord, endureth for ever: forsake not the works of thine own hands." I knew my thought was what had to be perfected.
