Having attended a Christian Science Sunday School regularly...

Having attended a Christian Science Sunday School regularly as a child and until the age of twenty, Christian Science is the only method of healing I have ever known. It was not until a very few years ago, as a result of a physical healing, that I really learned to appreciate this background. One afternoon a pain in my lower gums became increasingly noticeable and uncomfortable. I was in my final semester of college work and very busy with term papers and approaching exams. For this reason I tried to put the problem aside. As the pain increased, however, I realized that it had to be healed, so with the support of my parents I called a Christian Science practitioner and began to pray myself.

After two days there seemed to be little progress, and my mouth had become swollen. At that point, in great fear, I went to see a dentist. Although he was very kind, he said there was a possibility that several of the lower teeth might have to be pulled! I left the dentist's office without receiving treatment.

As I was deciding what to do, I found this passage from The First Church of Christ, Scientist, and Miscellany by Mrs. Eddy (pp. 149-150): "Remember, thou canst be brought into no condition, be it ever so severe, where Love has not been before thee and where its tender lesson is not awaiting thee. Therefore despair not nor murmur, for that which seeketh to save, to heal, and to deliver, will guide thee, if thou seekest this guidance." That was just the assurance I needed. Fear was replaced with the confidence that divine Love was right there, and a tender lesson was awaiting me. I called the dentist and thanked him, but I told him that I had decided to rely on Christian Science and that I knew it would heal me.
