Nobody can assert that our physicians, whether practical doctors or specialists, are out of work. Psychoanalysts, psychotherapists, and depth psychologists have a wide field for their work.... Today medicine knows about the connection between bodily suffering and psychological disturbances. The Bible has always known about it.

A helpless man was laid before Jesus' feet on a stretcher in a most unusual manner. His friends let him down on ropes through an opening in the flat roof. There was no other way to get close to the Master. And now, something incomprehensible happens. Jesus looks at the lame man and says, "Son, be of good cheer; thy sins be forgiven thee." For many of those standing around him this is blasphemy, and they are outraged. The sick man enters no protest. Neither do those who brought him. Thus, if through Jesus' word the sick man becomes a healed man who walks away in good health, the healing came from within—a liberation from an inner resistance to God.
