In 1966 I was healed in Christian Science...

In 1966 I was healed in Christian Science of a growth that developed on my neck. When the trouble first appeared, I tried to cover it with scarves. This went on for a year, and then the condition became such that it was necessary to have it regularly dressed by a Christian Science nurse.

During this trying period I prayed for a greater understanding of God. I was motivated by a deep desire to serve the Cause of Christian Science. Knowing that all disease is mental, even though it may appear in physical form, I endeavored to uncover and rid myself of false thinking. I needed to overcome a deep sense of hatred and resentment. I had to learn to love more universally. The physical condition caused me no pain, but the fear it occasioned was great. To be free of the fear, I often had to hurry to telephone a Christian Science practitioner and ask her to pray for me. Each day the request was made for treatment for one day with expectation of healing. A quotation from the Bible that I found of great help was (Isa. 41:10), "Fear thou not; for I am with thee: be not dismayed; for I am thy God."

At one point I felt extremely ill, and with the illness came paralysis of one hand and arm. During this time I found comfort in this passage from Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy (p. 225): "The powers of this world will fight, and will command their sentinels not to let truth pass the guard until it subscribes to their systems; but Science, heeding not the pointed bayonet, marches on. There is always some tumult, but there is a rallying to truth's standard." Within a day or two, with the practitioner treating me, the feeling of illness was overcome, except for the inability to use hand and arm. Within two weeks the paralysis was healed, and the hand and arm were restored to normal use.
