Good Is Undivided
"This or that" is a favorite form for the scenarios of human existence. You have the money, they tell us, for this or for that. The time, the talent, the staff and materials, the mental and physical energy. You can be a person of faith or of intellect. Of morality or of freedom. Of gentleness or strength.
If the choice offered is between a good and a bad, we need to make the right distinction and choose the good. More often the offer of alternatives is only a front for getting us to believe that good is divided and we can have only a limited amount—this or that.
But we don't have to be deceived by this. Spiritual good, the good that comes from God, is indivisible and limitless. An understanding of this can ensure all the good needed to fulfill all proper human aspirations at the proper season. It also brings this good in a manner that will foster continuing spiritual growth at the same time. Whether for individuals or for society, prosperous living need not be materialistic; nor need spiritual living be sparse. We do not have to make such choices.
