"What is the truth about God and man? When will the Comforter, promised by Christ Jesus, come? Why am I here?" These were some of the questions about which I was greatly troubled. My parents and my religion had provided me with strong reliance on God through faith. As a child, I was taught that God would meet my every need whenever I listened for His voice and put my hand in His. However, I yearned to know more of God, Love, who controls the universe. I explored several forms of religion, but found no answer. This gnawing search almost became an obsession and my health was endangered.

One spring my youngest child, five months old, became very ill with whooping cough, and I was filled with fear. I prayed earnestly; but the child grew worse each day until she became pale and listless and could retain very little food.

One day our eldest child's kindergarten teacher inquired about the baby. This newfound friend told me of Christian Science and sent me three pamphlets. That evening, I began to read one of them and at once realized I had found my new religion. It was clear to me that Christian Science must be the promised Comforter, and that Mrs. Eddy was the divinely inspired Discoverer and Founder of demonstrable Science. Later, I found Mrs. Eddy's own statement in Science and Health (p. 55): "In the words of St. John: 'He shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you forever.' This Comforter I understand to be Divine Science."
