Bennington Banner Bennington, Vermont

In [a previous] issue of The Banner there appeared an article titled: "U of C sociologist believes Shakespeare had right idea." [The author], a social scientist at the University of Connecticut, in his comments makes several references to Christian Science. His article brings out some good points, but also includes statements which are incorrect and will leave your readers with a wrong impression of Christian Science.

Quoting [the author], the article states: "Strong willpower is required, he maintains, to deny the reality of the senses and of bodily impairment and pain." The statement that Christian Scientists employ willpower is entirely false. Mary Baker Eddy, the Discoverer of Christian Science, makes many statements against the use of willpower in her writings, and on page 144 of its textbook. Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, she says: "Human will-power is not Science. Human will belongs to the so-called material senses, and its use is to be condemned."
