Casting Away the Garment
According to the narrative in Mark's Gospel, Bartimaeus, a blind man begging by the highway side, cried out to Christ Jesus for mercy. When his call reached the Saviour, "Jesus stood still, and commanded him to be called.... And he, casting away his garment, rose, and came to Jesus." Bartimaeus, receptive to the Christ, was awakened from a false sense of limitation and was healed of the blindness, and "followed Jesus in the way." Mark 10:49, 50, 52;
Couldn't we think of the garment Bartimaeus cast away as the false belief in a material selfhood, which seems to include negative qualities like envy, hatred, malice, resentment, all of which blind mortals? Christian Science teaches that all that really exists is God and His idea, the real man, the expression of pure spiritual qualities—love, wisdom, order, gentleness, goodness, health, joy.
The Christ, the spirit of Truth, is today healing the sick through the application of Christian Science. Through spiritually understanding this Science, mighty works are being accomplished by those who know, as Jesus did, that God's will is the only law there is, and that when this law is obeyed, only good ensues.
