Not by might, nor by power (Zech. 4:6)
The prophet directs these words to Zerubbabel, a descendant of David who had returned to Jerusalem from exile in Babylon about 520 B.C. and was directing the reconstruction of the temple. This task was particularly challenging because of the demoralized state of the populace, many of whom felt betrayed by those other Jews who preferred the comfort of Babylon to the hard work of rebuilding the city. Zerubbabel was assisted by Joshua, the high priest; both are mentioned by Haggai (2:4). The temple was completed in 515 B.C.
