The Healing Power of Gratitude

To be grateful for one's blessings when all is well is no task; but to be grateful for the spiritual good we possess in the face of some physical problem that has been of long duration may put our faithfulness to the test. "How can I be grateful," one may ask, "when I am burdened by suffering, discord, unhappiness?"

Yet many students of Christian Science have found that a disease or other difficulty, which has not yielded despite long hours of consecrated prayer and study, is quickly healed when they begin to recognize their blessings and express heartfelt gratitude for them. "Father, I thank thee that thou hast heard me," said Christ Jesus, "and I knew that thou hearest me always." John 11:41, 42;

Centering thought on our problems instead of on the truth of being, pitying ourselves in the process, only makes the problems loom larger and more difficult to surmount. Such negative thinking is self-centered instead of God-centered, and turns us away from the spiritual ideas of Truth, the Christ, ever at hand to free us.
