Christian Science first came into my life many years ago when I was employed by a man who was a Scientist. I had been opposed to what I thought Science was, but he and his family expressed so much love and joy that I began to get a different opinion of it. At times I read the textbook, Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy. I attended church services occasionally and went to Christian Science lectures, but I was never really a very devoted student.
A few months after my marriage I became seriously ill and went into the hospital for tests and X rays. The diagnosis was tuberculosis of the spine. I was told that I would have to go into a sanitarium, where I would be placed in a body cast for a year and a half while the spine healed. I asked to be released from the hospital so that I might make a decision. I had a great deal of fear and not much faith that Christian Science would help me, but in three days I had decided that I would depend on it. A Christian Science practitioner was called, and her unselfed, joyful help enabled me to stand by my decision. There was much opposition and fear in my family. The doctor, who was a lifelong friend, urged them to have me take further tests. In view of family fear and pressure I went through a clinic, where I was examined by specialists. The second report was even more alarming than the first. They told me that I also had pernicious anemia.
The practitioner said my true spiritual state, as God's idea, denied the reality of anemia as well as of the spinal condition. The prayerful metaphysical help in Christian Science was continued.
