The Man Sent by God

The impact on the world of the life and teaching of Christ Jesus was immediate, decisive, and lasting. He spoke with authority and demanded the attention of scholars as well as multitudes of less learned folk. From the first days of his ministry he conveyed such assurance that his message was from God, Truth, that "the people were astonished at his doctrine: for he taught them as one having authority, and not as the scribes." Matt. 7:28, 29;

The Master's conviction of his own right and authority to speak as he did came from his knowledge of his divine source. He was sent by God and he knew it. The parable he related in the temple—now known as the parable of the wicked husbandmen—showed that he not only understood this fact but recognized the purpose of his presence in the world and the fate he would eventually suffer.

Jesus told in his parable of corrupt husbandmen who killed the householder's servants when he sent them by turns to his vineyard to collect the fruits of the harvest. Then, when the householder finally sent his own son, the husbandmen said, "This is the heir; come, let us kill him, and let us seize on his inheritance." And, the Master went on, "they caught him, and cast him out of the vineyard, and slew him."
