The Dynamic Power of the Christ

The young man sat in the Nazareth synagogue on the sabbath. After a few moments he stood and was handed the book of Isaiah. From these prophetic writings he read the prophecy of the coming of the Messiah, or Christ (see Isa. 61:1, 2). When he had finished, he sat down, as was the custom of that day.

Everyone in the synagogue fastened his gaze on this man. No doubt there was something especially compelling about his reading, a sense of dominion, of confidence—a spiritual grace—that set him apart. Then, looking at the congregation, he said, "This day is this scripture fulfilled in your ears."

The people were astonished. "Is not this Joseph's son?" they said. His statement had left them incredulous. Then the young man went on, "Ye will surely say unto me. ...: whatsoever we have heard done in Capernaum, do also here in thy country." And he added, "No prophet is accepted in his own country." Luke 4:21–24;
