Our World Turned Right Side Up

Thomas Jefferson wrote to his fellow Founding Father of the United States, James Madison, "I hold it, that a little rebellion, now and then, is a good thing...." In the preserving of health there are certainly occasions when rebellion is a good thing. In Science and Health against the marginal healing "Righteous rebellion" we find Mrs. Eddy's words, "Instead of blind and calm submission to the incipient or advanced stages of disease, rise in rebellion against them." Science and Health, p. 391;

In resisting disease a little rebellion is not enough. We must persevere with our mental and spiritual rebellion until it has overturned material assumptions and effected permanent change in accord with spiritual reality.

Among Christ Jesus' countrymen a strong element would have had him lead a revolt against the Roman military occupation. But Jesus had a different purpose; it was to overthrow with divine Truth the whole oppressive systems of matter and material thinking that enslaved minds and bodies at a far deeper level than any political or military authority could do. In his many healings—of diseases often inveterate and believed incurable—and finally in his own resurrection and ascension above all material limitations Jesus overturned the basic claim that matter rather than Spirit governs man.
