In 1916 a friend invited me to visit the Christian Science Sunday School. My parents were not members of any church but did want me to attend some Sunday School, so they did not object to my enrolling in the Christian Science Sunday School as a regular pupil. Through what I learned in Sunday School and in studying the Lesson-Sermons in the Christian Science Quarterly I was healed of headaches, which had bothered me for six or more years. When I felt a headache coming on, I would deny that it could have power over me, because God did not make it, but He did make and love me. The headaches came less frequently, then stopped altogether.

Five years after starting to study Christian Science, when I was in my senior year in high school, I was forbidden by a doctor (my parents were not interested in Christian Science) to take any exercise because of a heart condition. This was very discouraging for me because I liked athletics very much. Of course I had to obey my parents and the doctor, but it didn't make sense to me that God, Love, would allow such a defect when He had given me the ability and desire to be active. I just couldn't believe divine Love, Mind, would permit such a thing.

The next fall when I entered college and took the entrance physical exam at the school, there was no apparent problem. As nothing was said to restrict my exercises, I attended regular gym classes and even went to extra classes during my spare time. During this period I was living in the home of a Christian Science practitioner, attending Christian Science Sunday School, and studying the Lesson-Sermons. I was serene in the conviction that God made man (the real "me") perfect and spiritual, not subject to a physical heart.
