Letters to the Press

From Christian Science Committees on Publication

Eagle

[In a] recent letter on the report, "Berks Pastor Leads on Spiritual Frontier," [the writer] made reference to "spiritual mind healing" as a "technique" used by Christian Scientists.

Prayer in Christian Science is quite the opposite of using or applying one's own mental or "psychic" powers as described by the [Pastor], It was Mary Baker Eddy's own disappointment with techniques, and particularly with mind-cure, which led her to place total reliance on God as the healing power—and to found her Church on that basis.

It calls for a willingness to attribute all power to God, to seek first "the kingdom of God, and his righteousness." This search demands of a Christian Scientist the same Christianization of thought and life, the same willingness to leave the old for the new, that it did for Jesus' followers.

Knowing [the writer] intended no discredit of Christian Science, and in the interest of accuracy, we are confident he will not object to having this clarification brought to his attention.
