A month after moving to a semitropical city, a fungus appeared on various parts of my body. The discomfort severely bothered me and often kept me awake at night. Now I rejoice that this condition caused me to turn my thought radically to Truth, God.

As the healing took almost a year, purification of my thought was necessary. Mrs. Eddy tells us (Science and Health, p. 540), "The muddy river-bed must be stirred in order to purify the stream." Numerous times I analyzed my thoughts and actions and asked myself questions such as: Have I been entirely honest in every circumstance? Do I love all of God's children? Do I realize God's omnipotence, His power to heal? These questions and many more helped me to see mortal mind's false claims and to establish my perfection as God's child. A greater appreciation and love for man were realized.

In the Bible and Mrs. Eddy's writings I studied references to purity, purify, peace, and joy. These truths aided me in seeing the nothingness of anything claiming to dim my peace and joy, and assured me of my perfection in God's likeness. Especially helpful was this statement from Miscellaneous Writings by Mrs. Eddy (pp. 8-9): "The Hebrew law with its 'Thou shalt not,' its demand and sentence, can only be fulfilled through the gospel's benediction. Then, 'Blessed are ye,' insomuch as the consciousness of good, grace, and peace, comes through affliction rightly understood, as sanctified by the purification it brings to the flesh,—to pride, self-ignorance, self-will, self-love, self-justification."
