Just prior to the last quarter of my senior year in college, a physician diagnosed my condition as complete physical exhaustion—a nervous breakdown. The prognosis was that I would need to leave school and not return for the final quarter, and thus not be able to graduate in June. By ambulance I was taken home, a distance of about eighty miles.

My parents and grandmother were active students of Christian Science. Although I had some appreciation of Christian Science and knew my mother had had a remarkable healing through its application, I wanted to be independent. I rebelled at accepting my parents' religion for myself.

When I arrived home from college my mother insisted I have help and left the decision to me whether it should be medical or Christian Science treatment. Because I couldn't visualize having medical treatment in my parents' home, as a line of least resistance I consented to having the help of a Christian Science practitioner. In about a week that condition was healed, and after an additional week I was able to return to school. I not only had final examinations to make up, but I was taking some difficult courses that final quarter. All of these I completed, graduating on schedule. I acknowledged that the healing was the result of the practitioner's and my parents' clear-sighted understanding of the spiritual laws of God. To them I had been seen as a perfect spiritual child of God, reflecting Godlike qualities.
