Two years ago, during what the newspaper and television media...

Two years ago, during what the newspaper and television media called an influenza epidemic, my husband became ill. He went to bed in much discomfort. Although he is not a Christian Scientist, he knows that Science heals, and he asked me to read to him. I had been realizing that nothing inharmonious can come between God and His idea, man.

So I took my Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy and opened it to certain passages in the chapter on Christian Science Practice, which I read aloud. One sentence was particularly helpful (p. 393): "Have no fear that matter can ache, swell, and be inflamed as the result of a law of any kind, when it is self-evident that matter can have no pain nor inflammation." Now and then I stopped to ask a question to be sure my husband was listening and getting what was being read. By evening he was able to have something to eat.

However, the next day this condition returned in a more severe form. After reading the Lesson-Sermon in the Christian Science Quarterly to him, I went into another room and prayed sincerely to God to know what was needed. The thought came clearly, "You must know the truth about this belief of flu not only for your husband but for the world." I saw that it was no more real for anyone else than it was for my husband. It was nothing more than a mistaken belief about God's perfect man. A mistake can be corrected when it is seen for what it is—a lie. It was then plain to me that I could reverse the lie to realize the truth of being, God and His creation, perfect and complete. For a few moments I was so absorbed in these thoughts that I was unaware of my surroundings. I was completely at peace and knew the healing had taken place, and this proved to be true. He woke the next morning free.
