As a young man with the responsibility of a wife and child, I suffered an unjust reversal in business, the shock of which resulted in a nervous breakdown. When I was fit enough to return to the office, I was given routine work. Although the loss of status was humiliating, it proved a blessing, for I had the opportunity to think and devote myself to finding out whether life had any purpose.
I read a good deal. On one occasion when reading a play, I came across a reference to Jesus' "miracles," and I realized that I should learn more about his life and teaching. I asked a very knowledgeable friend if he could advise me how to pursue such a study. It so happened that he was about to hand me a copy of The Christian Science Monitor, and it was not long before he loaned me a copy of Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy.
This book revolutionized my thinking and had a tremendous effect on me. It so stirred me mentally that at times I hardly dared to open the book, although I somehow felt it contained all the answers to my problems and would heal my fears.
