Have a Heart

We are often entreated, "Have a heart!"—sometimes lightly, again seriously. Recently, after using the expression myself, I pondered the words carefully. I realized that when one is actually being Christlike in his living and is expressing the great heart of God, Love, in every situation, he truly "has a heart."

A short while ago I emerged from a time of suffering into a complete reversal of outlook. I had consulted a Christian Science practitioner, and the resulting encouragement and explanations were plainly from the heart. And were accepted by a heart, so to speak, which had seemed to grow fearful and faint. Soon I was able to get to the primary need—the need for expressing more love—so that there was a great feeling of release and confidence, followed by healing.

Divine Love, which each of us mirrors in his true being, can heal, quiet, and bless. When we spiritually see and listen wholeheartedly, we are exercising spiritual sense, which reveals what needs to be healed in ourselves and others. Thus we are playing a vital part in bringing God's kingdom on earth. After speaking of the inevitable, eventual disappearance of sin, sickness, and death, Mrs. Eddy adds, "Learn this, O mortal, and earnestly seek the spiritual status of man, which is outside of all material selfhood." Science and Health, p. 476; This passage from the Bible might be a correlative: "Seek ye the Lord while he may be found, call ye upon him while he is near." Isa. 55:6;
