Spiritual Reality—Abstract or Concrete?

Christian Science can change the whole texture and orientation of our life in a way that leads to deepening fulfillment and sounder ethics. And this in turn helps us gain a conviction of reality as wholly spiritual. In Science, absolute spiritual reality is not abstract but concrete, and the realization of this heals. As Science pervades our thought, it heals the misconception that reality is material and subject to pain and dissolution, and so establishes health and calm.

Spiritual reality is abstract to unenlightened human thinking. But it is increasingly concrete to thought that is yielding to divine Truth and acknowledging the presence of good only. Unscientific human reasoning may fearfully believe that if the material were obliterated there could only be a vacuum. In contrast, spiritually scientific reasoning helps us understand and prove— through healing and moral renewal—that Spirit and its spiritual phenomena comprise concrete and perfect spiritual reality.

Christian Science is not nihilistic. It does not deny reality or ask us to believe in voids. But it does clarify what reality is—only that which divine Mind knows. The validity of this position is evidenced in diverse kinds of healing and adjustment, ranging from the correction of physical and mental ills to strained personal relations and collective or public problems. There is nothing abstract about an affirmation of reality that heals disease, and that brings to our thought and life evidence of God's good purpose in creating man in His likeness.
