When I lift up my hands toward thy holy oracle (Ps. 28:2)
Ewing and Rowlands write, "To raise or stretch the hand... is an expression of supplication." The gesture has the same meaning as folding one's hands in prayer. The word translated "oracle" was thought by many to be related to the Hebrew verb "to speak." Actually the word means "the back part" and refers to the Holy of Holies, the innermost room in the temple. The Syriac translation reads, "toward Your temple."
