One Saturday I decided to remove a dish from the outdoor cage of our South American racoon. Apparently I frightened the animal, and he grabbed my arm. When I tried to shake him off, he became more frightened, so that he bit and clawed the arm in several places. My husband, as well as neighbors, came to the scene, among them a doctor who offered medical help, which we declined. The doctor recommended that I immediately have a shot. Instead, as soon as we entered the house, my husband, at my request, telephoned a Christian Science practitioner, who, upon hearing the urgency in his voice, came to our home within minutes.

I knew that I must lift my thought in prayer, for the wounds looked serious. The practitioner and I thoughtfully repeated together "the scientific statement of being" from the textbook, Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy. It includes these words (p. 468): "There is no life, truth, intelligence, nor substance in matter. All is infinite Mind and its infinite manifestation, for God is All-in-all." Very soon my fear lessened, and I became quiet. The practitioner assured me that man is always the perfect reflection of God, and that my understanding of Christian Science enabled me to distinguish my true perfection as God's reflection, apart from the physical appearances, forever undisturbed and intact.

A close friend, a former registered medical nurse, now a student of Christian Science, cleaned and bound up the wounds, using no medication. The practitioner and I continued to claim my unimpaired perfection and uninterrupted unity with God.
