Some people find Christian Science and never again doubt that it will always heal. Others need a landmark to remind them that God's power does heal in every case.

My landmark healing took place a few years ago when I was a junior high school cheerleader. While practicing, I slipped and landed full force on my elbow. As I got up, I realized that my arm was immobile.

An X ray showed a bone was cracked in two places. The physician recommended that I return in a week for a cast to be applied. He further stated that the cast would have to be on my arm at least six weeks. Immediately my mother and I turned completely to God for healing and phoned a Christian Science practitioner for help.

The next day everyone was surprised to find me back at school without pain or swelling. However, I had been replaced on the cheerleading squad for the season. "What injustice!" I thought. But this impelled me to begin praying to God for myself, instead of letting others do all the work. I began to see clearly that I had been making a false god out of cheerleading. It had grown to be my primary love.

The First Commandment came into mind. "Thou shalt have no other gods before me" (Ex. 20:3). Separation had to be recognized as a lie about me, the perfect reflection of God. I knew that a constructive activity could not separate me from God, my creator.

My study of the hymns from the Christian Science Hymnal comforted me. As a result I slept more comfortably each night. The words from a hymn were so right for the situation (No. 196):

Let all that now divides us
Remove and pass away,
Like shadows of the morning
Before the blaze of day.
Let all that now unites us
More sweet and lasting prove,
A closer bond of union,
In a blest land of love.

This was my prayer to the one Father, divine Love. I held to these healing words and clearly saw my true relationship to Him.

Within a week another X ray confirmed the healing. The physician was astonished to see no cracks or separations. No cast was needed. And I was leading cheers at the next game!

This healing is just one proof of the effectiveness of Christian Science in my life. It has healed me of eczema, colds, infections, flu, internal disorders, and fear of unemployment. It also strengthened me throughout school, especially when, after precollege entrance exams indicated lack of ability, I was striving for and achieving a fine academic record.

I am grateful to be a member of The Mother Church, to be a useful member in a branch church, and to have recently had the inspiring experience of class instruction. Teaching in a school for retarded children gave me continued opportunity for seeing and living up to the high standards of Christian Science.
