Before I was born, my parents were introduced to Christian Science...

Before I was born, my parents were introduced to Christian Science by a man with whom my father worked. This man's infant son had had such a severe case of rickets that he was carried around on a pillow. His bones were so delicate that the least jarring might break them. The child could take very little nourishment. He was healed instantaneously after one Christian Science treatment.

Although raised in an extremely orthodox home, my mother immediately took up the study of Christian Science, and soon did such fine healing work that several members of her family also became interested. I was born at home, and before the birth the doctor predicted great difficulty because of the precarious position I was in. However, the prayerful work done by my mother and a Christian Science practitioner brought about a painless and harmonious birth.

I attended Christian Science Sunday School until I entered high school, but then I thought I was being deprived of the fun my friends were having, and I began to smoke and eventually to indulge in social drinking. Although our two sons were enrolled in Sunday School at my mother's loving request, I did not turn back to Christian Science until my need was urgent several years later. I suffered a nervous breakdown and was given up by three doctors who said they could do no more for me. My mother lovingly cared for me when my husband was at work, coming every day to read to me, and I had the help of a practitioner. Although the complete healing took several years, one of the early results of the prayerful work was my instantaneous healing of the smoking habit, although the practitioner knew nothing about my smoking. This healing, and that of social drinking which came about at the same time, led to my membership in a branch Church of Christ, Scientist.
