Nothing New Under the Sun

In every field of scientific research there are individuals and teams working with immense dedication for the discovery of pure knowledge. When they make a discovery, the new fact can be applied and hitherto insoluble problems can be resolved. The facts are never created by the scientist; they are uncovered by him as the result of his dedicated work. What appears as new is not really new; it is the revelation to an individual consciousness of a truth that has always existed.

A student of Christian Science, no less than a student of any other science, is required to dedicate himself to his work if he wishes to discover truth and increase his understanding of metaphysics. But it is of immense help to know that truths already exist; they are only waiting to be revealed. The Preacher of the Book of Ecclesiastes said, "The thing that hath been, it is that which shall be; and that which is done is that which shall be done: and there is no new thing under the sun."1

Increase of knowledge and understanding, considered from the Christian Scientist's point of view, starts from the premise that God, Spirit, is All and that He is all-knowing. He created man in His own likeness; thus man, spiritually created, is a complete reflection of God. But how can this fact be useful to us in our daily experience, where it seems that we know so little even about the material universe, not to mention the infinitude of spiritual Truth.
