For eight years I had a painful back condition and sought help...

For eight years I had a painful back condition and sought help from four doctors during that period. Each one had a different opinion as to what the trouble was. Various kinds of treatment were used, which gave me relief, but the condition would return. One doctor said I would have it the rest of my life. After falling down some stairs during a period when I was again experiencing this difficulty, I became worse and could not stand or walk more than two or three minutes at a time. X rays were taken, and I was told it would be necessary to operate on my spine. This was in February, 1953.

During the late 1930's, I had attended a Christian Science church a few times with a friend. Also, at that time, I had witnessed an instantaneous healing through prayerful treatment by a Christian Science practitioner. A roommate, who was a voice student, developed a severe cold and, in addition, was unable to retain food. The following morning she asked me to phone a practitioner, who came to the house. When she left an hour later, I returned to our room and found my roommate up and dressed, free from the cold and perfectly well. She kept a singing engagement that evening. I was in the process of moving and left the city two days later, but I could not forget what I had seen that morning.

Now, in my desperation, I thought of Christian Science and spoke to my husband about it. He encouraged me to look into it, and his support was invaluable to me. A practitioner was contacted, and I began studying the Bible and the textbook, Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy. Weekly visits and frequent phone calls were made to the practitioner, and I did little but spend time reading these books and the Christian Science periodicals.
