Each week I am more grateful for the testimonies in our periodicals, and as I read them, I feel I must express my own gratitude for Christian Science.
About forty years ago my wife and I became interested in Christian Science, and she had an instantaneous healing of a physical problem that a physician said could only be healed by an operation. I did not become interested for a physical healing but began attending church regularly. Through a desire to affiliate myself with Christian Science I was healed of the smoking habit when a Christian Science practitioner pointed out to me that Mrs. Eddy writes on page 206 of Science and Health, "The power of the human will should be exercised only in subordination to Truth." I saw that my life was governed by God, that it was the human will which reached for a package of cigarettes. The cigarettes of their own volition couldn't come to me. I have not smoked since.
One day while at work, I began to suffer with influenza. By the time I arrived home I could hardly walk from the bus, and after repeated stops for rest I arrived in a very weak condition. My wife said nothing about the physical condition (although I was expecting some pity) and prepared supper for the children and me. Within a half hour a feeling of well-being came over me that exceeded any I had known even when I was feeling well. I had my supper, and we all went to a theater. I later asked my wife what she had thought at the time, and she said that she had never seen man so clearly as the image and likeness of God as she had on that occasion. This healing has helped keep the fire of Truth alight in my day-by-day experience.
