As a soldier in World War II, I had been privileged to experience...
As a soldier in World War II, I had been privileged to experience in an unmistakable way the providence, power, and goodness of the one, invisible Being called God. Nevertheless, at the close of the war and for three years thereafter it seemed to me that I was in a pitiful condition. A bladder and kidney complaint made my life miserable. I was discontented and thought I would have to dissolve my marriage. Our child suffered from scrofula. My wife had an abdominal disorder. All efforts to find healing through physicians, homeopaths, and biochemical means met with failure.
Then one day I was handed a copy of The Herald of Christian Science, which I had never heard of before. In reading the articles I became increasingly incensed; I found them absurd. But the testimonies of healing toward the back—yes, these I understood. And it seemed to me that all these healings came about through clinging to the very "truths" dealt with in these articles. That puzzled me. Was this supposed to be the Comforter, the Truth, of which Christ Jesus spoke?
Through the woman who caused the Herald to come into our hands, I learned of the Christian Scientists' meetings, which I attended with my wife. Fourteen days later we went to a woman who had been recommended to us as one who was "in the practice." I will never forget the aura that radiated from this practitioner! It was only years later that I was able to define this as incorporeal, divine Love, reflected. Well, during the conversation—which was more a correction of my false concepts—in connection with the exposition of the first record of creation, I was healed of the bladder and kidney trouble. What joy! We went home filled with happiness.
