The Value of Church Membership
What does it mean to be a member of a Church of Christ, Scientist? Why can't being an attendant at a branch church be enough?
These were the questions I asked myself many years ago as a regular attendant at church services and lectures. I studied the Lesson-Sermon every day and tried to live up to what was unfolding to me Christian Science; still, I told myself I wasn't yet ready or good enough to join the church.
As I thought about this one day, it occurred to me that the real reason I didn't join the church was that I didn't want to have the responsibility of working on committees or attending business meetings. I thought I could support the church well enough without becoming involved in church activities. How grateful I am now that the real reason for my resistance to becoming a church member was uncovered! I at once set about taking the first steps toward membership.
