God's Care for Little Children

Children are "the spiritual thoughts and representatives of Life, Truth, and Love." This is the first part of the definition of "children" in Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, and refers to their true nature as God's divine offspring. Then Mary Baker Eddy continues the definition, "Sensual and mortal beliefs; counterfeits of creation, whose better originals are God's thoughts, not in embryo, but in maturity; material suppositions of life, substance, and intelligence, opposed to the Science of being."^{Science and Health, pp. 582, 583;}

Every infant who comes into the world can, despite his appearance of physicality, be identified in his real being as a spiritual, whole, loved individual representative of God. Each little one includes within his own true spiritual identity the qualities of divine Love, or infinite Mind, in whom we all "live, and move, and have our being."^{Acts 17:28;} He is cradled "in the secret place of the most High,"^{Ps. 91:1;} and abides under the gentle care of God's protecting power. The idea of Life as Love is inseparable from his consciousness. As Christ Jesus said of children, "In heaven their angels do always behold the face of my Father which is in heaven."^{Matt. 18:10;}

These facts of divine Truth, when understood, can bring comfort to all those young children in the world who are apparently pathetic victims of maltreatment.
