A Mother's Story

[As told to the Sentinel]

Recently one of my nephews gave our family a compliment which I treasure. He said to my husband, "Your children really have a wonderful sense of themselves." I am well aware that the story could have been quite different....

By the time my first son was five years old, I had pretty well labeled him. I thought that he was very nervous and that he was artistic and thus very temperamental and he was this and he was that. I would tell people right in front of him that he was these things. Naturally he was acting accordingly, and our relationship was becoming quite strained. The first thing a Christian Science practitioner told me when I started this with her was, "Your son is none of these negative things!" I had a lot to learn about why she could make such a bold statement. But maybe I should start by recounting some of the events that brought me to her door.

I attended a Protestant church regularly from childhood but always felt that there was a link missing. It was my nature to be happy, and I was often accused of looking at the world through rose-colored glasses. Marriage to one of my dearest friends only increased my conviction that life was meant to be good and I was meant to be happy. For several years the love we shared fed me and I was relatively content.
